Ritterkreuz award ceremony for Oberleutnant (Ing.) der Reserve Carl-August Landfermann (back to the camera, Leitender Ingenieur U-181). The medal was awarded on 27 October 1943 for his successes serving with the U-Boat ace and Brillantenträger Wolfgang Lüth (right). Landfermann and his men were able to repair damage to the U-Boat (either brought about by the ocean itself or depth charge attacks) that would usually only be possible at a shipyard.
