Military Parade in Vienna during Anschluss

Generaloberst Fedor von Bock (Oberbefehlshaber Heeresgruppen-Kommando 3) saluting the Wehrmacht cavalry during a military parade held at Ringstraße, Vienna, on March 14, 1938, two days before the Anschluss (Union) of Austria with Germany. Wearing glasses and a 1918 Stahlhelm Sondermodell on the left is General der Kavallerie Maximilian Reichsfreiherr von Weichs (Kommandierender General XIII. Armekorps), while the Luftwaffe officer on his right is Generalmajor Ludwig Wolff (Höherer Flieger-Kommandeur 5 und Höinherer Kommandeur), followed by Oberst Maximilian de Angelis (Staatssekretär im Bundesministerium für Landesverteidigung Wien) who wore the Austrian military uniform. Standing behind Von Bock in civilian clothes was the Reichsstatthalter Arthur Seyß-Inquart (Leiter der österreichischen Landesregierung), followed by SS-Brigadeführer Ernst Kaltenbrunner ("Staatssekretär für das Sicherheitswesen im Lande Österreich" und Führer des SS-Oberabschnitts Donau) who wore black visor cap behind Seyß-Inquart. One more identification: in civilian clothes behind Von Weichs was Ludwig Ritter von Eimannsberger, a retired General der Artillerie who was later recalled to active duty in August 1938.

Maximilian de Angelis and Eugen Ritter von Schobert

This picture was taken in Void, France, on 18 June 1940 by Kriegsberichter Ulrich from PK (propaganda-Kompanie) 501, and it shows two Wehrmacht generals with their officers. From left to right: Generalmajor Maximilian de Angelis (Kommandeur 76. Infanterie-Division) and General der Infanterie Eugen Ritter von Schobert (Kommandierender General VII. Armeekorps). The original caption from this propaganda picture: "Es geht weiter dem feinde nach: der generalstab des vorwärtsstürmenden korps ist immer vorne bei den truppen um jeder zeit rasche entschlüsse zu fassen" (the enemy continues: The general staff of the advancing army is always with the troops to make quick decisions at any time).

General der Artillerie Maximilian de Angelis

Born on 2 October 1889 in Budapest, Maximilian de Angelis was an Oberleutnant in thé artillery in 1910 and ended the 1914-18 World War I as a Hauptmann. He pursued his career in the Austrian army, rising to the rank of Oberst on 28 June 1933. Promoted to Generalmajor on 15 March 1938 then Generalleutnant on 1 June 1940 and General der Artillerie on 1 March 1942. During World War II, he commanded 76. Infanterie-Division. (1 September 1939), then XXXXIV. Armeekorps (26 January 1942). We again find him in command of 6. Armee (22 November-19 December 1943 and 8 April 1944-17 July 1944) then 2. Panzerarmee (18 July 1944). He kept this command until the end of the war. Sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Yugoslav authorities and to 25 years by the Soviet authorities, he was released on 11 October 1955. He died at Graz in Austria on 6 December 1974. Awarded the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes (9 February 1942) mit Eichenlaub #323 (12 November 1943).
