Wilhelm List Visited Crete

In the summer of 1941, following one of the most audacious and costly military operations of World War II, Crete stood as a freshly conquered German possession in the eastern Mediterranean. The Battle of Crete, codenamed Operation Mercury (Unternehmen Merkur), had concluded with a German victory on 1 June 1941 after intense fighting that began on 20 May. This airborne assault marked the first large-scale use of paratroopers in history, but it came at a staggering price. Amid the consolidation of German control over the island, Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm List (Oberbefehlshaber 12. Armee), made a notable visit to Crete.

Field Marshal List visited Crete in late May 1941, shortly after the island had been captured during Operation Mercury. As the Commander-in-Chief of the 12th Army, he arrived to inspect the strategic situation and oversee the transition to a formal occupation. His visit took place between May 28 and June 1, 1941, coinciding with the final stages of the British evacuation from Sphakia. During his time on the island, he met with high-ranking officers including General der Flieger Kurt Student, who had led the paratrooper assault, to discuss the high casualties and future troop deployments.

List's visit to Heraklion, the island's largest city and a key eastern airfield objective, took place shortly after the formal end of major combat. Historical photographs from the period capture the field marshal during this inspection tour, highlighting the German effort to project stability and control in the newly occupied territory. Accompanied by Student, the visit served multiple purposes: assessing the battlefield conditions, reviewing the performance of airborne and ground forces, boosting morale among the troops who had endured fierce resistance from Allied forces (British, Commonwealth, and Greek troops) and, notably, armed Cretan civilians, and planning for the occupation phase.

Himmler Visiting Totenkopf (1943)

The visit of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler (Chef der SS und Deutschen Polizei) to the headquarters of the SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Totenkopf" near Kharkov, Ukraine, 24 April 1943. To the left of Himmler is SS-Oberführer Hermann Prieß (Kommandeur SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Totenkopf"), while to his right is SS-Obersturmbannführer Otto Baum (Kommandeur SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment "Totenkopf"). On the far left is SS-Sturmbannführer Otto Kron (Kommandeur SS-Flak-Abteilung "Totenkopf"), while second from the right is likely SS-Hauptsturmführer Anton "Toni" Laackmann (Kommandeur SS-Panzerjäger Abteilung 3 "Totenkopf").

Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler visited the area around Kharkov in spring 1943, during a trip that included inspecting Waffen-SS units from the SS-Panzerkorps (which included the SS Division Totenkopf on 24 April 1943, along with Leibstandarte and Das Reich). On that date, he delivered a speech to SS commanders (a "Kommandeurbesprechung" or meeting of SS division commanders) in Kharkov.

The Totenkopf Division had returned to the Eastern Front in early 1943, participated in the Third Battle of Kharkov (February–March 1943, recapturing the city), and was still operating in the region as part of Heeresgruppe Süd (Army Group South) before shifting toward the Kursk preparations later that spring/summer. Himmler's visit involved addressing senior officers from the SS divisions active there, emphasizing ideological indoctrination, racial theories, and the "dread reputation" of the SS units from the Kharkov fighting. Photos and references to Himmler examining captured Soviet equipment (e.g., a T-34 tank) or SS troops in the Kharkov sector also tie to this period.

Herbert Otto Gille Visiting Totenkopf Command Post

As part of his normal duties, SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Waffen-SS Herbert Otto Gille (Kommandierender General IV. SS-Panzerkorps) made it a point to visit every division command post at least once a day. In this photograph, taken in early August 1944, Gille (left) is speaking to SS-Oberführer Helmuth Becker (center, Kommandeur 3. SS-Panzer-Division "Totenkopf"). Behind Becker stands two of his key officers, SS-Obersturmbannführer Josef Swientek (Kommandeur SS-Artillerie-Regiment 3 "Totenkopf") and SS-Obersturmbannführer Erich Eberhardt (Ia Operations Officer 3. SS-Panzer-Division "Totenkopf"). On the right, with map board slung over his shoulder, is SS-Untersturmführer Günther Lange, Gille’s new O5 Begleitoffizier.

Visit of Walther von Brauchitsch to Balkan

This photo was taken in May 1941 during Von Brauchitsch's visit to the Balkans shortly after the Germans occupied Greece and Yugoslavia. It looks like that the Army Commander in Chief is inspecting the array of German war machines used in recent military campaigns. The cannon in the back is a Flak 30 (Flugabwehrkanone 30) 20mm caliber but without a towing vehicle underneath, and is mounted on a trailer. For the identification of the people, from left to right: 1.Oberstleutnant Heinz von Gyldenfeldt (Erster Generalstabsoffizier beim Oberbefehlshaber des Heeres), 2.Generalfeldmarschall Walther von Brauchitsch (Oberbefehlshaber des Heeres), 3.Oberstleutnant i.G. Max-Josef Pemsel (Chef des Generalstabes XVIII. Gebirgskorps), 4.Generalmajor Ferdinand Schörner (Kommandeur 6. Gebirgs-Division), and General der Infanterie Franz Böhme (Kommandierender General XVIII. Gebirgskorps).

Heinrich von Vietinghoff and Karl-Walter Lapp

Generaloberst Heinrich von Vietinghoff (wearing ledermantel) in a picture supposedly taken on late 1944 or early 1945 in Tirol, Austria. From 24 October 1944 - 16 January 1945, he was "mit der stellvertretenden Wahrnehmung der Geschäfte als Oberbefehlshaber Südwest beauftragt" (stood in for Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring who was recovering from head injuries sustained in an automobile accident). The Ritterkreuzträger at left is Major Karl-Walter Lapp (Kommandeur Tiroler Standschützen), who received the Ritterkreuz on 14 August 1944 as Kommandeur Ski-Bataillon 82. There's a very interesting and detailed chapter on the Tiroler Standschützen in Roland Kaltenegger's "Spezialverbände der Gebirgstruppe 1939-1945" (2004), a highly recommended book with many photographs of both the Standschützen and on Karl-Walter Lapp. Many high dignitaries visited Major Lapp and his Tiroler at the training grounds by the Alpini Barracks in Gossensaß. Among others were Generals like Generaloberst Heinrich von Vietinghoff, General der Gebirgstruppe Valentin Feuerstein as well as the Gauleiter of Tirol-Vorarlberg Franz Hofer. SS-Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler (as Chef of the Ersatzheer) and SS-Obergruppenführer Karl Wolff were also among the visitors as well as Reichsjugendführer Baldur von Schirach.

Walter Model Visiting Aachen in Kübelwagen

Generalfeldmarschall Walter Model (Oberbefehlshaber Heeresgruppe B) aboard a Kübelwagen on an inspection trip to German command posts in the vicinity of Aachen, Nordrhein-Westfalen (Germany), on 9 October 1944. Here he was visiting 246. Volksgrenadier-Division, led by Oberst Gerhard Wilck who doubles as Kampfkommandant Aachen. The command post is located in a bunker of the Westwall fortification. Seated in the back seat are two staff officers of Heeregruppe B who were also Ritterkreuzträger (recipient of Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes), from left to right: Leutnant der Reserve Hans Luthardt and SS-Hauptsturmführer Heinrich Springer. This photo also shows the use of the Zeltbahn as tarnung (camouflage) on the front hood, an unusual practice! The photo was taken by Kriegsberichter Scheerer and was first published on October 16, 1944. The city of Aachen itself became the first German territory to fall into the hands of the Allies after the battle that took place from October 2 to 21, 1944.

Fritz Witt and Sepp Dietrich near Kharkov

SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Waffen-SS Josef "Sepp" Dietrich (Kommandeur SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler") pays a visit to the headquarters of SS-Standartenführer Fritz Witt (Kommandeur SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 1 / SS-Panzergrenadier- Division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler") at Olchowatka, Belgorod, near Kharkov, in March 1943. Dietrich wore a sheepskin coat which had the official name "Sous-vetementent en peau fourrée Modele 1938", with an added collar, lace and zipper. Even so, it seems that the Divisionskommandeur still felt the weather is too cold so he prepared a thicker fur coat stored in the car seat, a stark contrast when compared to Witt who looked quite comfortable even though he was only wearing a standard uniform! Dietrich's trousers were of the stiefelhose, combined with the Luftwaffe's Flieger-Pelztiefel (aviation boots) with a furry top. The car used by Dietrich was of the Einheits-Pkw Horch 40 type with a very low number plate (SS-502). In addition, jerrycans for spare gasoline have been modified so that they can be attached to the side of the car. This photo was taken by SS-Kriegsberichter Johan King, who accompanied the Leibstandarte Division in the many heavy battles on the Eastern Front in 1943 and 1944.
