Waldemar Riefkogel and Erwin Meierdrees


Officers of SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Totenkopf" celebrating the Summer Solstice in the Eastern Front. On the right hand side of the photograph is SS-Obersturmführer Waldemar Riefkogel (Chef 1.Kompanie / I.Abteilung / SS-Panzer-Regiment 3 "Totenkopf"), in the middle is SS-Hauptsturmführer Erwin Meierdrees (Kommandeur I.Abteilung / SS-Panzer-Regiment 3 "Totenkopf"), while the SS-Obersturmführer on his right is not identified. The picture was taken on 20-21 June 1943 just before Unternehmen Zitadelle (Battle of Kursk).

Hermann Büchting Cuts the Ritterkreuz Cake

Die Ritterkreuz-Torte (The Ritterkreuz Cake): This photo by Kriegsberichter Kroencker was taken in the evening and showed Kapitänleutnant Hermann Büchting, who happily cut a cake decorated with dough in the form of Eisernes Kreuz (Iron Cross), which was presented as a surprise by its crew, on the day the captain received the prestigious Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes. The photo was taken on the Eastern Front. Büchting (March 14, 1916 - June 27, 1992) was the commander of the Schnellboot (speedboat) which obtained the Ritterkreuz on April 22, 1943 as Kommandant S-27 / 1. Schnellbootsflottille. On September 1, 1943 he was given the responsibility as a Commander of 1. Schnellbootsflottille, a position he held until the end of the war. Other medals and awards that he receives: Wehrmacht-Dienstauszeichnung IV.Klasse (5 April 1939); Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1. October 1938 (20 December 1939); Medaille zur Erinnerung an die Heimkerhr des Memellandes 22. März 1939 (20 December 1939); Eisernes Kreuz II.Klasse (20 April 1940) und I.Klasse (3 January 1941); Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz (25 April 1940) und in Silber (18 May 1943); Schnellbootkriegsabzeichen (16 December 1940); and Finnish Vapaudenristin Ritarikunta, 4th class (4 November 1941)

Eberhard Rodt in Color Picture
