On the left is DRK volunteer Liselotte Maaßen, bearer of the Eisernes Kreuz II.Klasse with a ladies' ribbon. This was awarded to her after she had brought around 150 wounded soldiers into a train under Russian fire so that they could be rescued. Sitting in the chair is Josef Kulot from Herten, who received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 24 September 1942 as Obergefreiter and Gruppenführer in 6.Kompanie / II.Bataillon / Infanterie-Regiment 60 (motorisiert) / 16.Infanterie-Division (motorisiert) "Windhund".

Léon Degrelle Mounted a Horse in Russia

Oberleutnant der Reserve Léon Degrelle during a march through a Russian village, possibly in 1942. Beginning in November 1941, the Walloon Legion was assigned to anti-partisan operations in occupied Soviet territory. In February 1942 it was attached to the 100. Jäger-Division and moved to the frontline, where it engaged in combat with regular Soviet forces for the first time on 28 February. By the end of 1942, the Legion was reduced by attrition to 150 men and would have to rely on new recruitment drives to sustain itself. The Legion's battlefield performance was of great value to Degrelle, who came to be appreciated by German officers. In May 1942, he was made an officer and awarded the Eisernes Kreuz I.Klasse for his conduct in battle.

Karl Kochendörfer in Croatia 1943

A picture postcard of German soldiers conferring in a forest in Croatia, 1943. It is one of a series of photographs taken by the 7. SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen" in Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro from 1942 to 1944, after the German invasion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The photographs are believed to have been captioned by the commanding office of the Waffen-SS, and had been in the possession of Friedrich Wilhem Krueger, who served with the division from November 1943 until April 1944. The Ritterkreuzträger (Knight's Cross recipient) 2nd from left is Karl Kochendörfer. He received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 18 September 1942 as Unteroffizier and Geschützführer in 3.Kompanie / Schnelle Abteilung 296 / 296.Infanterie-Division.
