Previously, from January to July 1944, they were both served in the same unit: Panzergrenadier-Division "Grossdeutschland": Von Manteuffel as the Divisionskommandeur while Von Natzmer as his Chief of Operations.

Generalleutnant Hasso von Manteuffel (in the halftrack, Kommandeur Panzergrenadier-Division "Grossdeutschland") with his Operations Officer (Ia), Oberst i.G. Oldwig von Natzmer in the Eastern Front. The book "Panzergrenadier-Division Großdeutschland" by Horst Scheibert said that this picture was taken in the end of January 1944, but the summer uniform wore by Von Manteuffel and Von Natzmer suggests that it was probably taken in the spring or summer 1944. Other picture taken from the same occasion (see below) is added with the "May 1944" writing by Von Manteuffel himself.

Hasso von Manteuffel and Otto Baum

This picture was taken in the Eastern Front in February 1944 - first published on 16 March 1944 - and it shows Generalleutnant Hasso von Manteuffel (center, Kommandeur Panzergrenadier-Division "Grossdeutschland") with his comrade from the Waffen-SS, SS-Standartenführer Otto Baum (Kommandeur SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 5 "Totenkopf" / 3.SS-Panzer-Division "Totenkopf"). At left is Oberst i.G. Oldwig von Natzmer (Ia Panzergrenadier-Division "Grossdeutschland"). Manteuffel is not yet wearing the Schwerter for his Ritterkreuz, which he received on 22 February 1944 for his achievements as the commander of 7. Panzer-Division in late 1943.

Oldwig von Natzmer in Gift Ceremony

An unknown Unteroffizier (non-commissioned officer) of the "Großdeutschland" division was honored by Oberst i.G. Oldwig von Natzmer (Ia im Generalstab Panzergrenadier-Division "Großdeutschland"). The picture was taken in the end of summer 1943 by Kriegsberichter Bauer of PK (Propaganda-Kompanie) Division "Großdeutschland", in the central sector of the Eastern Front.

Oldwig von Natzmer with Entfernungsmesser

General der Infanterie Rudolf Schmundt (second from left, Chefadjutant des Heeres beim Führer und Oberbefehlshaber der Wehrmacht) and Oberst im Generalstab Oldwig von Natzmer (second from right, Ia Erster Generalstabsoffizier Panzergrenadier-Divisionland "Großdeutschland") near the German air defense installation in the Eastern Front, June 1944. The installation was named Entfernungsmesser (range finder) of the type Kdo.​Ger.40 (Kommandogerät 40), and was commonly used by anti-aircraft units using the heavy Flak 18 or Flak 40. The apparatus is used to determine the position of the enemy aircraft as well as calculate its distance from the ground. It takes at least five crew to operate this rangefinder, while its weight of almost 1 ton - 915 kg to be exact - makes its scope of use limited only as a means of self-defense and not attack support. Even so, the super quality lens it uses and the well-tested accuracy of its target locking make the Kommandogerät 40 the mainstay of the Wehrmacht's gun fire controllers. This photo was made by Kriegsberichter Gottert, and was first published in the "Berliner Verlag" in June 1944.

Panzergruppe 3 during Operation Barbarossa

Panzergruppe 3 during the start of Unternehmen Barbarossa, the invasion of Germany to the Soviet Union, between 22 June - 10 July 1941. We can see a group of military officers conferring, numerous military vehicles waiting and traveling along the road. Also tent with the sign: "General", where soldiers playing music for their officers and others (violin, two accordions, percussion). Generals and officers conferring over a map in the woods. Several wear the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes. Some faces that can be recognized :
