Studio Color Pictures of Heinz Guderian

Studio portrait of Generaloberst Heinz Guderian which was taken in 1943, not long after Hitler appointed him as Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen (General-Inspection of Panzer Troops). The photographer is Walter Frentz. In February of 1943 - after Stalingrad - he was recalled as Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen, responsible for modernizing of the German armored troops. He quickly formed a good relationship with Albert Speer, the Minister for Armament and Ammunition and both were able to dramatically increase the rate of Panzers build per month, also many corrections to the Panzers were made by Guderian in person, who traveled relentlessly around factories and shooting ranges.

Herbert Otto Gille with the Brillanten

A picture of Herbert Otto Gille as SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Waffen-SS with the Brillanten medal, belong to author Mark C. Yerger. Signed in the late 1950s at his book shop, was Herbert Gille's favorite image of himself. Those who came to the shop got such larger size examples (to big for a standard letter envelope) with the same in a smaller size going to those who wrote him. Signed with his preferred color fountain pen. Brillanten zum Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes and Deutsches Kreuz in Gold, he is the most combat decorated Waffen-SS officer, along with Sepp Dietrich.

Theo-Helmut Lieb in Color

Generalleutnant Theo-Helmut "Theobald" Lieb (Kommandierender General XXXXII. Armeekorps) photographed by Walter Frentz at the Führerhauptquartier Wolfsschanze in Rastenburg, East Prussia, after the award ceremony for the "Heroes of Cherkassy" with Hitler on 20 February 1944. Although Gille and Degrelle was also awarded the medals on this same day at the FHQ, it seems that Lieb received the Eichenlaub alone. However, there are several photos showing both Degrelle, Gille, Lieb and Press Chief Dietrich taken after the two ceremonies. Lieb himself received the Eichenlaub for his further achievements during the battle for the Cherkassy pocket. Especially during the breakout from the pocket he would show great bravery and energy. He collected a Bataillon of stragglers from the Korpsabteilung B and the 5. SS Panzer-Division “Wiking” and broke through a Soviet armoured group south of the road Potschapinzy-Lissjanka. With his horse Lieb then swam over the Gniloi-Tikitsch and reached safety at Lissjanka. For his role in this battle he would be christened the “Lion of Cherkassy” and be awarded the Eichenlaub directly from Hitler himself.

SS-Gruppenführer Herbert Otto Gille

Herbert Otto Gille as SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Waffen-SS. He was highly regarded for his leadership qualities and tactical abilities. He commanded Waffen-SS units at the regiment, division and corps level with distinction during the war. Gille was popular with his men and admired for his personal bravery. Despite being an early Nazi Party member, Gille was known for his apolitical views. The author Heinz Höhne in The Order under the Death Head characterized Gille as an enigma and "Nur-Soldat" (soldier – nothing else) who once threatened a newly assigned Weltanschauungsoffizier (political indoctrination officer) with a clean-out squad to gather his uniforms and other possessions and throw them and the officer out of the unit.

SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Waffen-SS Herbert Otto Gille (Kommandeur 5. SS-Panzer-Division "Wiking") was awarded the Schwerter to his Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 20 February 1944 for his division’s role in the Cherkassy break-out. He poses with them here. Two months later, on April 19, Gille won the highly prestigious Brillanten after flying into surrounded Kovel and organizing its successful defense. Regimentskommandeur Herbert Otto Gille in 1942

SS-Oberführer Herbert Otto Gille (Kommandeur SS-Artillerie-Regiment / SS-Division "Wiking") in 1942. Regiment formed at Truppenübungsplatz Amersfoort in the Netherlands in 1940. While in this command, Gille proved to be an apolitical soldier who led from the front. One revealing instance of this is recounted by Heinz Höhne: "[Like Felix Steiner], Standartenführer Gille, Steiner's Artillery Commander, was also in the Reichsführer's bad books. Gille was an entirely non-political officer who would have nothing to do with ideology. To Obersturmbannführer [Ernst] Fick, the divisional ideological observer, he growled: `Wearing of the brown shirt is not permitted in this aristocratic artillery regiment. I'll put a clean-out squad into your room." (Höhne, The Order of the Death's Head, p. 544, citing letter from Fick to Karl Wolff, 27.01.1942, RFSS Microfilm 38) Although Fick reported this "disrespect" to the chief of Himmler's personal staff, Karl Wolff, Steiner ensured that there were no reprisals against Gille for his political unorthodoxy and evident dislike of Fick, a belief that Steiner apparently shared." (Douglas E. Nash, From the Realm of a Dying Sun, Volume 1)

Herbert Otto Gille with Finnish Medal

This picture was actually taken in 1943 and showing Herbert Otto Gille as SS-Brigadeführer and Commander of Wiking Division, but we can see that the rank in the Kragenspiegel (collar tabs) and Schulterklappen (shoulder boards) had been edited so now it shows Gille as SS-Gruppenführer. It was a common practice during war time to add additional grade of medals or higher rank when the only picture available is an old one. BTW, the medal hanging below the Ritterkreuz is Vapaudenristin 1.luokka (Finnish Cross of Liberty with Swords), which was received by Gille on 6 March 1943. This picture was probably taken on the occasion of its presentation.

Herbert Otto Gille in Early 1944

SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Waffen-SS Herbert Otto Gille (Kommandeur 5. SS-Panzer-Division "Wiking") in a picture taken in early 1944. Some source (like this one) claims that this picture was taken on 21 February 1942, which is not possible because since 20 February 1944 Gille was already received the Schwerter for his Ritterkreuz, while in this picture he is still wearing the Eichenlaub.

Karl Frewer Misidentified as Theodor Tolsdorff

In many sites and publications (for example, HERE), this man is said as Theodor Tolsdorff (3 November 1909 - 25 May 1978), a recipient of Brillanten zum Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes with the last rank of Generalleutnant. In reality, he is actually Ritterkreuzträger Karl Frewer (21 July 1908 - 6 March 1945) who received the Ritterkreuz on 12 November 1943 as Major and Kommandeur I.Bataillon / Grenadier-Regiment 167 / 86.Infanterie-Division. The most obvious difference is that Frewer was alo a recipient of Nahkampfspange (visible in this picture), while Tolsdorff was never awarded the same medal.

Hans-Ulrich Rudel in a Tita Binz Postcard

Brillantenträger Major Hans-Ulrich Rudel in a Tita Binz postcard Nr. P 365. Tita Binz (1903-1970) was a German photographer, who portrayed in her Atelier Binz many of the film stars of the Third Reich. For Film-Foto-Verlag, she also made portraits of the soldiers who were Ritterkreuzträger (holders of the Knight's Cross). Of course that is uncommon for a typical entertainment company, but apparently they were also under the control of the new rulers who needed as much means for propaganda. It is at this point that two differend worlds seems to run together at least in pictures. The actor, the hero of the silver screen and the soldier, the hero of the theater of war were both raised in the same way. Remarkably Binz photographed no soldiers of the Waffen-SS. This might be due to the fact that she was friends with Hans Oster (1887-1945), a convinced opponent of the Nazi regime. She knew by that friendship also the 'conspirators' Erwin von Witzleben (1881-1944) and Erich Hoepner (1886-1944) which she portrayed all three. These pictures where not made for Film-Foto-Verlag.

The leader and Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht, at the suggestion of the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Field Marshal von Brauchitsch, awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Crosses to Private Hubert Brinkforth, gunner in an infantry regiment. Private Brinkforth, who turned 25 on April 15th, destroyed 11 English tanks with his gun near Abbeville within 20 minutes. Despite heavy fire, he allowed them to come up to a distance of 100 meters and then shot them down.)

Hubert Brinkforth in Hoffmann Postcard

Obergefreiter Hubert Brinkforth in Hoffmann postcard series Nr. R7. This propaganda postcard was published by 'Photo-Hoffmann' in München and measures approximately 15 x 10,5 cms. Heinrich Hoffmann, Hitler's personal photographer, made various series when publishing his photo's as postcards. Perhaps the most popular is the R serie with Knight's Cross holders where the 'R' stands for 'Ritterkreuzträger'. All the series with a letter as prefix are more or less known. But Hoffmann published also a serie (apart from 1501 to 1599) with no prefix running from number 1 to 1200. I will call it the 'main serie' and it is at the same time the most difficult serie to complete. Although all the postcards are from Hoffmann they have different publisher names and places (Münich or Berlin): Photo-Hoffmann, Verlag Heinrich Hoffmann, Presse Illustrationen Hoffmann.  The serie consist not only postcards but also poster and folders with series of postcards.

Three Interesting Stories about Ferdinand Schörner in Norway

Here's some stories of "Ferdinand the bull" Schörner when he was in Lapland as a Commander of 6. Gebirgs-Division. Stories are from 'Kansa Taisteli' magazine and told by Finn Leo Lahdenperä who served at Finnish navy:

Just before Chrismas in 1941, German ship was sunk in Kirkenes. It's cargo was christmas rations, including beer. Next spring part of its cargo was raised and beer with other stuff was transported to Kirkenas and Liinahamari. In Liinahamari local commandant gave permission to give some beer to cantines. German supply Unteroffizier made fatal error and gave his friends a sausage and beer that evening. Night was a success, no drunks and no brawl. When the Unteroffizer woke up in next morning, military police did came. He was taken to Schörner and then to courtmarshal. In the afternoon he was shot.

In the summer 1942 German merchant ship was anchored in Liinahamari. It's Captain had invited German and Finnish naval officers to the ship for afternoon coffee. A German Major, who was in charge of Northern supply traffic, was also present. Suddenly Schörner enters to cabin. He greets the Captain who was also a Kriegsmarine officer. Then he turns to Major: "you are not a Major anymore. You are now a Private. You will report to me after one hour in my HQ!".Then he went to the ex-Major, ripped off his shoulder boards and shouted "Hinaus!". The Captain said: "General, you are in my ship and she's in my command. You can take disciplinary actions in your own territory". Schörner bowed and marched out. It's 14.00 and the poor Major was actually in his "dienst" (duty) time and should not be having coffee! When he did came to Lapland, Schörner ordered "luxury" furnitures removed from the officer's quarters and collected cars and motorcycles away from the ex-Major. They could only use them in service matters and not on their free time. He then send some fat supply personel to frontline or ordered them on diet, while leaner men were send to kitchen duties!

In autum 1942 war exercise was ordered between Germans and the Finns. 30 Finnish naval personel "fought" against 2 companies of Germans. In the end, the Finns won. In after evolution, Schörner yelled to his men: "these Finns could have wiped out all of you. Shame on you! After this is over, every day is 'mehr übung'!" Then he asked commander of the Finnish team how did they win?.The Finn get mixed up in German language and said: "Herr General, wir scheissen so gut (we shit so well)." He obviously meant to say "wir schiessen so gut (we shoot so well)." Then even Schörner smiled.

Heinrich Schüler Ritterkreuz Actions

Heinrich Schüler (17 December 1903 - 12 January 1945) received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 18 September 1942 as Hauptmann der Reserve and Führer II.Bataillon / Infanterie-Regiment 525 / 298.Infanterie-Division. The medal was awarded for actions during the battle of Rostov. While south of the city, he was able to capture a crossing over the Don which the rest of his Division was able to quickly exploit. This had important consequences for the remnants of the Soviet forces around Bataisk. The city was stormed shortly afterwards on 27 July 1942 after a tough fight by the defenders.

Schüler received the Eichenlaub #218 for his Ritterkreuz on 2 April 1943 as Hauptmann der Reserve and Kommandeur II.Bataillon / Grenadier-Regiment 525 / 298.Infanterie-Division. The medal was awarded for his outstanding leadership during the retreat of the 298. Infanterie-Division back to the Donez river in early 1943. In the process the Division would be encircled a total of three times by the Soviets, but each time it was able to break out and continue its movement until it reached Malinovka, SW of Izyum. Schüler would particularly distinguish himself again and again during this time.
