Heinrich von Vietinghoff Inspecting Flak Unit in Italy

Generaloberst Heinrich von Vietinghoff (Oberbefehlshaber 10. Armee) gives a smile to a Luftwaffe soldier at an observation post near Napoli/Naples, Italy, September 1943. The optical device in front of him is a 10x80 Flakfernrohr. Due to allied bombing, the Flakfernrohr were primarily used for identifying attacking aircraft and directing the large 4m rangefinders, searchlights and cannons of the anti-aircraft batteries. They also proved useful on the battlefield, and a version with 20-deg inclined eyepieces was produced for use at sea. A single half of the 10x80 binocular served as Z.F. (Zielfernrohr) 10x80, a sight for the 8.8cm artillery.

Wolfram von Richthofen and King Boris III of Bulgaria

Generalfeldmarschall Dr.Ing. Wolfram Freiherr von Richthofen (left, Chef Luftflotte 4 und Oberbefehlshaber Südost) with King Boris III of Bulgaria (moustached). The picture was taken in August 1943 during the visit of King Boris to Führerhauptquartier "Werwolf" in Vinnitsa, Ukraine. The first meeting between Richthofen and Boris took place in early 1941 when Richthofen moved his units into Bulgaria via Romania. He found the country primitive, and resolved to improve the infrastructure, particularly communications, for the invasion of Yugoslavia. He intended to operate 120 aircraft from Bulgarian airfields and moved them into place on 1 March 1941. While preparations were taking place he indulged in hunting and horse riding expeditions as a guest of the Bulgarian Royal Family. With Boris III of Bulgaria, he discussed dive-bombing techniques and the Corps' new aircraft, such as the Junkers Ju 88.

Oldwig von Natzmer with Entfernungsmesser

The installation was named Entfernungsmesser (range finder) of the type Kdo.​Ger.40 (Kommandogerät 40), and was commonly used by anti-aircraft units using the heavy Flak 18 or Flak 40. The apparatus is used to determine the position of the enemy aircraft as well as calculate its distance from the ground. It takes at least five crew to operate this rangefinder, while its weight of almost 1 ton - 915 kg to be exact - makes its scope of use limited only as a means of self-defense and not attack support. Even so, the super quality lens it uses and the well-tested accuracy of its target locking make the Kommandogerät 40 the mainstay of the Wehrmacht's gun fire controllers. This photo was made by Kriegsberichter Gottert, and was first published in the "Berliner Verlag" in June 1944.
