Karl Schlamelcher and Wilhelm Kempke

This photo measures 181 x 129mm and shows Wehrmacht members applauding as Adolf Hitler delivers a speech at the inauguration of the Kriegswinterhilfswerk 1942/43 (War Winter Relief 1942/43), 30 September 1942. All representatives from the Wehrmacht branches were present, including some of its Ritterkreuz recipients who happened to be on leave from the front lines. In this photo, we can at least see two of them: On the left is SS-Sturmbannführer Karl Schlamelcher (Ritterkreuz on 1 March 1942 as SS-Sturmbannführer and Führer of III.Abteilung / SS-Artillerie-Regiment 5 / SS-Division [motorized] "Wiking"), and in the middle is Feldwebel Wilhelm Kempke (Ritterkreuz on 21 August 1941 as Feldwebel and Gruppenführer in 1.Kompanie / I.Bataillon / Fallschirmjäger-Sturm-Regiment / 7.Flieger-Division).

Goebbels Last Front Visit and Public Appearance (1945)

Reichsminister Dr.phil. Joseph Goebbels visits the Silesian front town of Lauban (Luban, Poland) on 9 March 1945. He meets with Generaloberst Ferdinand Schörner (Oberbefehlshaber Heeresgruppe Mitte). Goebbels greets troops, including 16 year old Hitler Youth member Wilhelm Hübner, on the market square of the town. View of the square shot through a broken window pane. Goebbels speaks to the soldiers. Graphic shots of dead civilians from the same area. The narrator describes the perpetrators as "Untermenschen" and the associates of Roosevelt's Christian soldiers. Original sound of Goebbels giving a speech in Görlitz a day later, 10 March 1945. He says that the German soldiers will show no mercy to the enemy on the Eastern Front and that Hitler will overcome this crisis as he had been in the past. He tells of a conversation in which Hitler stated that he believes that victory will be theirs. Close ups of men and women in the crowd. After Goebbels is finished speaking the crowd is led in a chorus of "Sieg Heil."

Joseph Goebbels, the Propaganda Minister of Nazi Germany, held his last public appearances in early March 1945. On March 9th, 1945, Goebbels visited the Silesian city of Lauban, which was recaptured in early March by German units from the XXXIV. Panzerkorps. He reviewed a parade from German soldiers on the market square and awarded Iron Crosses to German Soldiers and Hitler Youth. One of the last footages and pictures of Goebbels are from that occasion, including a famous clip of Goebbels awarding the Iron Cross 2nd class to Willi Hübner, a 16-year old Hitler Youth.

The next day, on March 10th, Goebbels visited the Silesian city of Görlitz, 25km west of Lauban. There, he held his last public speech in the concert hall of the city.  In front of an audience of 2.000 people, mainly local NSDAP politicans, soldiers and factory workers, he again encouraged the soldiers to continue fighting and stirr up their defensive will.

This was the last time Goebbels spoke publicly. He commited suicide just seven weeks later, on May 1st, 1945, during the Battle of Berlin.

He was tasked to take dispatches to the individual command posts. He was also credited for taking provisions and panzerfausts in a wheelbarrow up to the front line under fire. Walter Nowotny Watching a Game

Oberleutnant Karl-Heinz Schmidt from 2.Staffel / FAGr 5 (Fernaufklärungsgruppe 5) welcomes Hauptmann Walter Nowotny (Geschwaderkommodore Jagdgeschwader 101) upon his arrival at Mont-de-Marsan airfield, a long-range reconnaissance base in southwestern France, 24 May 1944. Nowotny arrived on his own Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-4 aircraft to watch a handball game between JG 101 and FAGr 5. Note the execution of the landing gear flap (meaning the presence of an internal flap) and the highly polished paintwork of this Fw 190. The crosses on the fuselage of the planes from JG 101 have an unusual proportion. It is believed that this particular aircraft also had a yellow spiral on the spinner. In this picture you can also see Nowotny's personal symbols - the "13" marking and the "Green Heart" emblem. Even in the presence of their encouraging commander, the handball team of JG 101 lost with a score of 17:4 to the FAGr 5 team.

Joachim Schepke Speaks to the Youths at Sportpalast

From left to right: Oberbereichsleiter and SS-Standartenführer Heinrich Hansen (Reichssachgebietsleiter für "wehrgeistige Erziehung" im NSLB und war Verbindungsoffizier des Hauptamtes für Erzieher zum Oberkommando der Wehrmacht), Charakter als Konteradmiral Reinhold Gadow (Direktor der Bibliothek im Oberkommando der Wehrmacht), Kapitänleutnant Joachim Schepke (Kommandant U-100), and Generalmajor Johannes Frießner (Inspekteur des Erziehungs- und Bildungswesens). The picture was taken on 6 February 1941 in Sportpalast Berlin during the speech of Kapitänleutnant Schepke to the German youths. Only 6 weeks after this picture was taken, Schepke died when U-100 was sunk at 0318hrs on 17 March 1941 Southeast of Iceland in approximate position 61N, 12W, after being rammed and depth charged by the British destroyers HMS Walker and HMS Vanoc (Niestlé, 1998). Vanoc located U-100 with her early radar in heavy fog and chased the contact. Schepke is said to have been caught on the bridge when the boat was rammed. Six men survived and 38 were lost.
