Herbert Otto Gille with His Medal Bars

A rare picture showing SS-Standartenführer Herbert Otto Gille as the Kommandeur of SS-Artillerie-Regiment / SS-Division "Wiking" (motorisiert) with his medal bars. The picture was taken in 1941, possibly before Operation Barbarossa (German invasion of Soviet Union). The medal bars are, from left to right: 1914 Eisernes Kreuz II.Klasse (Iron Cross 2nd class), Österreichisches Militärverdienstkreuz III.Klasse (Austrian Military Merit Cross 3rd class), Braunschweigisches Kriegsverdienstkreuz II.Klasse (Brunswick War Merit Cross 2nd class), Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer 1914-1918 (Cross of Honor for Front Fighters 1914-1918), Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 13. März 1938 (Anschluss Medal), and Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1. Oktober 1938 (Sudetenland Medal). The two decorations below the bars are Braunschweig Kriegverdienstkreuz I.Klasse (Brunswick War Merit Cross 1st class) and 1939 spange zum 1914 Eisernes Kreuz I.Klasse (1939 clasp for 1914 Iron Cross 1st class).

Hermann Graf Wedding

The wedding day of Luftwaffe ace Oberst Hermann Graf and actress Jola Jobst, which were held on 29 June 1944. This picture shows when the bride and groom entering their names together in the "Goldene Buch" (Golden Book) at the City Hall of Wiesbaden. Graf and Jobst first met in Berlin in 1943 when the Luftwaffe ace organizing the necessary transfers for his new assignment as the Kommodore of Jagdgeschwader 50. He was introduced to the young film actress Jola Jobst, and then they got in touch. From April to early July 1944 Graf spent time recovering in a hospital in his home-town of Engen. In June he married Jobst, whom he had been seeing over the past year. After Hermann Graf had returned from Soviet captivity in December 1949 his marriage with Jola Jobst collapsed and they were divorced. Following her divorce, Jobst married fellow actor Wolfgang Kieling in 1950. Tragically, for unknown reason, Jola Jobst committed suicide only two years later at the age of 36...

The Funeral of Admiral Reinhard Scheer

In 1928, Admiral Reinhard Scheer accepted an invitation to meet his adversary from the time of the Battle of Jutland (1916), Admiral of the Fleet Jellicoe, in England. However, at the age of 65, Scheer died at Marktredwitz on 26 November 1928 before he could make the trip. He was buried in the municipal cemetery at Weimar four days later. His tombstone reads: "hier ruht admiral reinhard scheer [Here rests Admiral Reinhard Scheer] — with the dates of his life, his flag in metal applique and the single word "skagerrak" (the German name for the Battle of Jutland).

German Generals and Admirals at Führergeburtstag

Generals and admirals of the Wehrmacht stood in the stands of honor at the culmination of Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday celebration, which was held in Berlin on April 20, 1939. They all wore paradeanzug (parade uniform), complete with feldbinde (brocade belt), auszeichnungen (medal bars) and schnurr (lanyard). Front row from left to right: Generaloberst Erhard Milch (Generalinspekteur der Luftwaffe), General der Flieger Hans-Jürgen Stumpff (Chef der Luftwehr), Generalleutnant Ernst Udet (Generalluftzeugmeister und Chef Planungsamts der Luftwaffe), Admiral Max Bastian (Präsident Reichsfürsorge- und Versorgungsgerichts der Wehrmacht), and Generalmajor Friedrich Fahnert (Höheren Kommandeur Luftnachrichtenschule Berlin). For additional identification: Generalleutnant Walter Petzel (Inspekteur der Artillerie) is the bespectacled man standing behind Fahnert; Generalmajor Hermann von Hanneken (Bevollmächtigter für Eisen- und Stahl auch zum Leiter der Hauptabteilung II Industrie) stood between Bastian and Fahnert, Generaloberst Wilhelm List (Oberbefehlshaber Heeres-Gruppenkommando 5) between Udet and Bastian, and General der Flieger Friedrich Christiansen (Korpsführer NSFK) between Stumpff and Udet. This photo itself was made by Hitler's personal photographer, Hugo Jaeger. Note that Milch and Stumpff both wear the Star of the Yugoslav Order of the Crown on their chests!
