Johann Port was born on February 3, 1915 in Bernkastel-Kues in Rhineland-Palatinate and joined the Wehrmacht on November 2, 1937. The only 1.64 m tall but tough rifleman received his basic training at the 105th Infantry Regiment in Trier, where he became a heavy machine gunner (sMG) in the 8th company. When it was formed on October 6, 1936, the regiment was subordinated to the 34th Infantry Division. During the mobilization it was placed under the control of the Trier Border Division on the West Wall. From September 19, 1939, it was placed under the new 72nd Infantry Division.
