Ernst Gaedckens (12 April 1914 - 16 December 1998) received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 2 April 1943 as Oberfeldwebel and Zugführer in 2.Kompanie / I.Bataillon / Grenadier-Regiment 46 / 30.Infanterie-Division. The following wartime excerpt describes why Gaedckens received the Ritterkreuz: "Oberfeldwebel Ernst Gädckens received his Ritterkreuz on the 02.04.1943 for his achievements as a Zugführer in a Holstein Grenadier-Regiment. He distinguished himself by eliminating a strongly garrisoned Bolshevik strongpoint south of Lake Ilmen following bitter close combat. He himself was the one who proposed and masterfully executed the assault operation.”
