Cheerful for the "Führer": This is how Perseverance Großadmiral Karl Dönitz (Oberbefehlshaber der Kriegsmarine) presented himself in Nazi propaganda, here in 11 January 1945 with German sailors, aboard a ship which is in service on the western theater of war. His submarines were nicknamed as "floating coffins" by the German people - 30,000 of 40,000 U-boat sailors did not return. Dönitz himself would go on to succeed Hitler as head of state and order the surrender of Nazi Germany in May 1945.Source :
