Erwin Rommel with His Commanding Officer in WW1


Major Theodor Sproesser (left, Kommandeur Württembergische Gebirgs-Bataillon) with Oberleutnant Erwin Rommel (Kompaniechef in Württembergische Gebirgs-Bataillon). They were pictured after both receives the Pour le Mérite in the same day, 10 December 1917. Sproesser and Rommel recieves the coveted medal for chasing the Italians in the Alps during the Battle of Caporetto in the First World War. The unrelenting pursuit by Rommel, compelled Sproesser to give Rommel a unit of the size of a battalion (2-3 reinforced companies) usually commanded by a Captain or Major. Rommel completely take the Italians by surprise and surround all the 9,000 enemy troops and take them as prisoners. So, it is fair to say that Sproesser recieved his fame due to Rommel's brave infiltration into enemy lines!
