Ritterkreuz award ceremony for Oberst Hans Källner (right, Kommandeur Schützen-Regiment 73 / 19.Panzer-Division). The medal was awarded by the Divisionskommandeur of 19. Panzer-Division, Generalmajor Gustav Schmidt (left). The recommendation for the awarding of the Ritterkreuz to Oberst Källner was submitted on 24 April 1942. Källner formally received the Ritterkreuz as the 967th member of the German Armed Forces on 3 May 1942, while the preliminary document and decoration were given to 4. Armee on 6 May 1942. The recommendation said that during April 1942, in the area west of Kaluga, a freshly arrived Soviet rifle division launched an advance that got to within 3 km of the the Roslawl—Juchnow road. In response Oberst Källner took command of the first friendly battalion that arrived on the scene, retook those villages that had been lost in a counterattack and pushed the Soviets away far enough so that they could no longer take the road under fire. The result was that this Soviet breakthrough attempt was brought to a halt. Källner would receive the Knight’s Cross for this action.
