Erich Topp Presented Gifts to War Correspondent

In an unofficial ceremony, Kapitänleutnant Erich Topp (second from left, Kommandant U-552) together with two of his officers presented a commemorative gift to Rundfunkberichter (Radio Journalist) Heinrich Schwich (left), who had accompanied and covered the fifth sea patrols of U-552 which took place from September 4 to October 6 1941. Two of Topp's subordinate officers in this photo later became U-boat commanders as well: Oberleutnant zur See Siegfried Koitschka (right, II. Wachoffizier U-552) who later became Commander of U-616, and Oberleutnant zur See Götz Baur (second from right, I. Wachoffizier U-552) who later became Commander of U-660. This photo itself was taken by Kriegsberichter Kurt Schlemmer (Marine Propaganda-Abteilung West) at the German Naval base complex in Saint Nazaire, France, on October 9, 1941.
