Wolfram von Richthofen in Color

General der Flieger Dr.Ing. Wolfram Freiherr von Richthofen (Kommandierender General VIII. Fliegerkorps) posed for a picture taken by Walter Frentz in 28 February 1942, after an audience with Hitler at Führerhauptquartier Wolfsschanze as a newly recipient of Eichenlaub (Ullstein Bild gives 15 February 1942 for the ceremony date, while the first date provided by Oberkommando der Wehrmacht diary). In the same ceremony, Hitler also promoted Richthofen to Generaloberst. Richthofen himself received the Eichenlaub #26 for his Ritterkreuz on 17 July 1941. The medal was awarded for the distinguished service of his VIII. Fliegerkorps during the fighting in the Balkans and at Crete. In the latter campaign they were critical in both the ground support of the beleaguered Fallschirmjäger and attacks against the British fleet around the island.

The welcoming ceremony of the Legion Condor which was held at the Lustgarten, Berlin, on June 6, 1939. Adolf Hitler (Führer und Oberster Befehlshaber der Wehrmacht) had just arrived at the ceremony site and was immediately greeted by the Wehrmacht officials. From left to right: SS-Gruppenführer Karl Wolff (Chef der Hauptamt Persönlicher Stab Reichsführer-SS), Generaloberst Erhard Milch (Generalinspekteur der Luftwaffe als Vertreter des Oberbefehlshaber Göring), Generalmajor Dr.Ing. Wolfram Freiherr von Richthofen (2. Befehlshaber der Legion Condor), Generalfeldmarschall Hermann Göring (Oberbefehlshaber der Luftwaffe), and General der Flieger Hugo Sperrle (1. Befehlshaber der Legion Condor). The driver next to Hitler is SS-Sturmbannführer Erich Kempka, his personal chaffeur. The Condor Legion was a German military "volunteer" (mainly the Luftwaffe) deployed to defend the Nationalists led by dictator Franco in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

The picture was taken in August 1943 during the visit of King Boris to Führerhauptquartier "Werwolf" in Vinnitsa, Ukraine. The first meeting between Richthofen and Boris took place in early 1941 when Richthofen moved his units into Bulgaria via Romania. He found the country primitive, and resolved to improve the infrastructure, particularly communications, for the invasion of Yugoslavia. He intended to operate 120 aircraft from Bulgarian airfields and moved them into place on 1 March 1941. While preparations were taking place he indulged in hunting and horse riding expeditions as a guest of the Bulgarian Royal Family. With Boris III of Bulgaria, he discussed dive-bombing techniques and the Corps' new aircraft, such as the Junkers Ju 88.
