Regimentskommandeur Otto Kumm in Rzhev

This picture was taken when SS-Infanterie Regiment "Der Führer" - part of SS-Division "Reich" (motorisiert) - had just come out of the months of winter fighting at Rzhev in early 1942. They were to parade for Generaloberst Walter Model (Oberbefehlshaber 9. Armee), who asked Regimentskommandeur SS-Obersturmbannführer Otto Kumm where his Regiment was. Kumm stated they were on parade outside. When Model went outside, 35 men were standing in the snow, the remnant of 3,000 soldiers of Der Führer that started Barbarossa! Incidently, one of the 35 was Friedrich Buck, who later received the Ritterkreuz in Budapest and Nahkampfspange in Gold.
