Hans Eikmeier in the Command Post

The command post of II.Abteilung / Reiter-Regiment 32 / 3.Kavallerie-Brigade in 1944/1945. Of course, the unknown officer on the field telephone catches your eyes immediately. Five Tank Destruction Badge (Panzervernichtungsabzeichen) on his sleeve meaning that he had single-handedly destroyed 5 enemy tanks using a hand-held weapon. Sitting in the middle is the only 26 year old Abteilungsführer (Detachment Leader), Rittmeister Johannes "Hans" Eikmeier, who was born on the 3rd December 1918 in Wiesbaden. Éikmeier, awarded with the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold, Ehrenblattspange and the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes, survived the war and later studied veterinary medicine. From 1964 to 1987 he worked as a professor of internal and forensic veterinary medicine at the University of Gießen. He died in 2012.
