The picture was taken by Kriegsberichter Geller on 21 June 1942 when 297. Infanterie-Division on the way to Stalingrad. Riedel received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 8 October 1942 and Eichenlaub on 25 January 1943, both as the commander of 3rd Battalion.
