SS-Sturmbannführer der Reserve Dipl.-Ing. Otto Skorzeny (Kommandeur Sonderverband z.b.V. Friedenthal) in a studio portrait after he received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes (directly from Adolf Hitler) in 13 September 1943, a day after the successful operation to liberate Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from his prison hotel in Gran Sasso, Italy. In the same day, Skorzeny got promoted from SS-Hauptsturmführer d.R. to SS-Sturmbannführer d.R. Note that this picture had been edited before, - in the kragenspiegel and schulterklappen - and the edited version had been circulated not long after this picture was taken!
