Friedrich Kimmich (13 July 1890 - 20 October 1962) received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 11 December 1942 as Major der Landwehr and Führer II.Bataillon / Grenadier-Regiment 554 / 342.Infanterie-Division. The following newspaper excerpt (dated 17 December 1942) describes why Kimmich received the Ritterkreuz: “Major der Landwehr Kimmich and his Grenadier-Bataillon stormed a strongly fortified and heavily defended enemy hill. Those determined Bolshevik counterattacks that followed were crushed in the face of the inspiring leadership of the commander and the bravery of his Grenadiers. This action took place in the central section of the Eastern front at the end of this past September.”
