Hugo Sperrle with Ritterkreuzträger from KG 40

Generalfeldmarschall Hugo Sperrle (middle, Chef Luftflotte 3) with two Ritterkreuzträger from Luftwaffe. At left is Oberleutnant der Reserve Heinrich Schlosser (Staffelkapitän 2.Staffel / I.Gruppe / Kampfgeschwader 40), while at right is Oberleutnant Rudolf Mons (Flugzeugführer in I.Gruppe / Kampfgeschwader 40). The picture was possibly taken on 18 September 1941, during the Ritterkreuz award ceremony for both experten for anti-shipping operations. Schlosser received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes after about 80 sorties, primarily against shipping targets near Norway and in the North Atlantic. He proved himself a successful pilot here, sinking several ships with a total of 55000 GRT. In the other hand, Mons received the Ritterkreuz after flying a total of 51 missions with the Focke-Wulf Fw 200. In that time he sank 63000 GRT of enemy shipping and damaged a further 32000 GRT.
