Bio of Generalmajor Albert Buck

Albert Buck (23 January 1895 – 6 September 1942) was a German general during World War II. He was a recipient of the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes of Nazi Germany. Buck was born on 23 January 1895 in Stuttgart, Wurttemberg, in the German Empire. He served in the Reichswehr after 1913 and fought in World War I, gaining the Iron Cross (1st Class) and the Honour Cross of the World War, and during World War II he fought in the invasions of Denmark, France, and the Soviet Union. He became the Major-General in command of the German 198th Infantry Division during the war in the Soviet Union and served at Uman, Kiev, and Rostov, among other battles. He was killed at Novorossiysk on 6 September 1942 when several grenades exploded near his car, when the vehicle he was transported in was attacked by a Soviet attack-force from the 2nd Granadethrowers Company of the 723rd Regiment.

He received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 17 July 1941 as Oberst and Kommandeur Grenadier-Regiment 305 / 198.Infanterie-Division. The following press article describes why Buck was awarded the Ritterkreuz: “Generalmajor Buck Fallen: During the heavy fighting in the Noworossijsk area the commander of an Infanterie-Division, Ritterkreuzträger Generalmajor Albert Buck, fell in battle on the 06.09.1942. As an Oberst and commander of an Infanterie-Regiment he forced a crossing over the Pruth river near Sculeni on the 22.06.1941. Here he created a bridgehead and subsequently defended it successfully against the onslaught of 2 Soviet divisions. Within this time he personally led his reserve in counterthrusts during multiple threatening situations, and the result was that all Bolshevik attempts to retake the bridgehead were thwarted. The victorious battle fought by Buck’s Regiment was of decisive importance for future operations. For this he was awarded the Ritterkreuz in July 1941. His death means that his Division has lost an outstanding commander who always kept the well-being of his troops in mind.”
