Generalleutnant Johann Pflugbeil (left, Kommandeur 221. Sicherungs-Division) with his officers. He received the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 11 April 1942 in this capacity, and Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 12 August 1944 as Kampfkommandant Mitau. Under Pflugbeil's command, the 221st Security Division took part in Nazi security warfare and was responsible for numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Heeresgruppe Mitte rear area, central sector of the Eastern Front.Source :
