Walter Nowotny Returning from Combat Mission

Oberleutnant Walter Nowotny (Staffelkapitän 1.Staffel / I.Gruppe / Jagdgeschwader 54) received congratulations from his comrades shortly after returning from a combat mission on the Eastern Front in a Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-5 "Weisse 4" (Werknummer 1501), summer 1943. The Luftwaffe fighter ace takes off his gloves in front of the tail section of the White 4. The aircraft's serial number "1501" is visible on the fin. The lower part of the rudder is painted yellow. This picture was taken by Kriegsberichter Ertz, and at least was taken before September 4, 1943, when Nowotny was awarded the Eichenlaub after achieving 189 confirmed aerial victories.

Note that the outer weapon points of the MG FF machine guns in the wings have been removed. The aircraft's armament thus consisted of two MG17s and two MG151/20s. Also note the peeling of the paint near the wing toe. The aircraft was built at the Focke-Wulf factory in Marienburg, West Prussia in the spring of 1943. This picture itself was taken by Kriegsberichter Ertz, at least before 4 September 1943 when Nowotny was awarded the Eichenlaub after achieving 189 confirmed aerial victories.

The A-5 version, which began production in 1943, had a fuselage length 15 cm longer than the A-4. The BMW 801D-2 was moved forward for a number of reasons. A larger access hatch to the equipment was also installed. Surprisingly, Nowotny flew an obsolete version of the A-4 in 1944. Although the performance of the A-4 was no lower than subsequent versions, it had the same 1,700 HP. and the same weapons. In this side view of Nowotny's "White 4" with the "bull" emblem, we can see the unusual shape of the number "4". The border between the two green camouflage colors is clearly visible in the area where the vehicle's serial number is applied. You will also notice that the earlier vehicle numeric designation has been painted over. --- Regarding the coloring, "White 4" is shown in the standard scheme for the Eastern Front - green camouflage with a contrasting transition between colors. This picture itself was taken by Kriegsberichter Ertz, at least before 4 September 1943 when Nowotny was awarded the Eichenlaub after achieving 189 confirmed aerial victories.
