Korvettenkapitän und Brillantenträger Wolfgang Lüth (left, Kommandeur Marineschule Flensburg-Mürwik) presented the Ritterkreuz des Kriegsverdienstkreuzes mit Schwertern for Wehrwirtschaftsführer Otto Merker (Generaldirektor bei Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG), during the award ceremony which was held in Berlin on 30 September 1944. Merker formally received the medal on 25 August 1944 for the “war decision-making achievement”, having reduced the construction time for type U-Boot-Klasse XXI submarines from the original 11.5 months to 2 months!
