Albert Müller (20 September 1913 - 2 February 1993) received the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes on 4 September 1943 as SS-Hauptscharführer and PaK-Zugführer in 4.Kompanie / I.Bataillon / SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment “Westland” / SS-Panzergrenadier-Division “Wiking”. Müller commanded a platoon of Pak guns in the Wiking division during the first battle of Izyum. The details of the action that led to his award are not known with precision, but enough is known about the actual fighting itself. Muller’s Zug came under a heavy tank attack during a rainstorm, and he continually exhorted his men despite the difficult circumstances. At one point he took command of a cannon himself, and through the Zug’s combined efforts 11 tanks were destroyed. The Soviets then attacked with an infantry battalion, but Muller and his men were able to defeat this threat as well. For his efforts in preventing a Soviet breakthrough, Muller was subsequently awarded the Ritterkreuz and given the nickname ‘Pak-Muller’.
