German officers conferred with the help of the maps during the Battle of Kursk (5 July 1943 – 23 August 1943). The one at far right at the back with the goggles is Generalmajor Walther von Hünersdorff (Kommandeur 6. Panzer-Division). On 8 July 1943 Generalmajor von Hünersdorff succeeded in breaking through a heavily defended enemy anti-tank ditch position northeast of Belgorod. Exploiting his success, he brought up his and an additional Panzer-Regiment 27 from 19. Panzer-Division (which was subordinated to him) and launched a bold thrust towards the northeast on his own initiative. During this armoured charge his force stormed an important village of Melichewo while also destroying 20 Soviet tanks and 30 heavy anti-tank guns. For this amazing achievement he was awarded the Eichenlaub for his Ritterkreuz on 14 July 1943. Tragically, Hünersdorff was killed only three days later after being shot in the head by a Soviet sniper. He was posthumously promoted to Generalleutnant.
