Hans Speidel at the Establishment of the Bundeswehr
Official appointment of the first 101 NCOs and officers of the Bundeswehr, 12 November 1955: Defense Minister Theodor Blank with Generals Adolf Heusinger (left) and Hans Speidel (right); Behind Heusinger is Personalchef Karl Gumbel. After World War II the responsibility for the security of Germany as a whole rested with the four Allied Powers and when the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949, it was without a military. With growing tensions between the Soviet Union and the West and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) secretly rearming, the allied forces considered options for West German rearmament and on 12th November 1955 the Bundeswehr was officially established.
